Background

Blink Cincinnati

Blink Cincinnati was a four-day festival that offered large-scale architectural projections and interactive art pieces throughout a 20-block area in Cincinnati from the banks of the Ohio River to Findlay Market in Over the Rhine.

ADEX teamed up with BHDP Architecture to create one of the more memorable experiences in the event. Attendance at the four day event was estimated at over 1 million people.

At the entrance to the Cincinnati Public Library a design for the area was developed based on a storybook theme and focused on one the most popular children’s books, Peter Pan. An illuminated diorama was developed of white layers and light with simple white silhouetted shapes. This allowed the visitor to step inside the storybook as characters emerging from the pages. The book was built on a large scale to create an inspiring affect as the visitor approached.  White silhouetted images of plants trees and animals were positioned along the path ways leading up to the book and the library to set the stage for the for the diorama.

Fables Across Time: Kalila and Dimna explores classic Arabic folktales: their origins, their role in early Islamic culture, and how they influenced fairy tales familiar to many today. Kalila and Dimna are Arabic translations of stories found in the two-thousand-year-old Indian Panchatantra, and via oral tradition, these tales became beloved fables throughout Islamic society.

ADEX International collaborated with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to create the exhibit. Featuring original artwork, unique interactives and bilingual labels (English and Arabic), Fables Across Time illustrates how the stories known to one culture may have their roots in another. Dr. Al Khemir, celebrated author and artist,  describes her creative process in video presentations. Guests are encouraged to create their own artwork reflecting their own favorite stories. Visitors learn how listening to stories, creating art, and working together help bridge differences among people.

A History Worth Sharing

There is quite a history to this local nonprofit that does so much good for the community and ADEX was there to help tell the story. The key components of this project include the following:

  • Site visits of facilities and gathering artifacts.
  • Evaluating all information and distilling down to create the essence of the story with the content.
  • Maintained the feel of the era by keeping the aesthetics in the “70’s” color scheme and mode to convey the “decade”.
  • Created a way-finding package for the exterior of the facility along with carrying the theme and timeline through different facilities around the city.

The Goodman Walkway

One does not realize what is involved in bringing the history of a facility or company to life. ADEX prides itself in our process to assist in researching and compiling the appropriate information that can create a compelling story. The project consisted of:

  • Evaluating the space as it presented its own challenges in that it had windows on both sides of the walkway, so studying the lighting effects was key in how we displayed the informational panels.
  •  Determining the most effective way to display the information in an interesting and engaging way as you moved up the walkway into the lobby.
  • Incorporating additional lighting above the display in a location that did not lend itself to spotlighting.
  • Creating a “brand” type of feel in a subtle way as we traveled through history.
